The Ignorance of Immaturity

“Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but stupid lasts forever.”- Aristophanes

Flashback to when I was young… the beach air blowing the window curtains, the smell of food cooking on the grill, and Norah Jones’ voice drifting throughout the house. These are all things that described each of our beach trips I can remember. Though, when I was younger, I did not particularly like Norah Jones, nor did I like everything that my food-venturing parents made on the grill. But now, being almost nineteen years old, I find myself listening to Norah Jones as I take a bite of my “adult food”.

I love to brag about how I have always loved to venture with foods. The more I think about it though, was this true? Since I can remember I have always maintained a strict rule of 2: I don’t eat tomatoes or spinach. In the last few years I ate spinach. The verdict: I liked it. Have I been missing out my entire life? Maybe so. Sadly, I think this is true about many dislikes, of many people in today’s world.

Being that my parents grew up in southern Louisiana, there is never a shortage of good ole’ cajun food in the house. What my mom cooked- I ate. Whether I liked it or not, my mother was not a short order cook. Although I sometimes still have immature antics, I am appreciative of the venturing spirit my parents taught my sister and me. Although I have been relating all of this to food, the same rule applies to all facets of our daily lives… So, instead of sticking to what we think we know, maybe we should branch out a little.
